There are 2 named Ul familes.

I only know of the ul'Tai. What is the other one?

Reason I thought of this was because of a mod I hope is going to be at Origins or GenCon. Why were those Malfeans in Jappa? Elorii (Malfean or not) won't gain any benefit in the infernals taking over the human's part of the continent.

I think this got lost in the shuffle.

While I don't *know* what the real reason the Malfeans were at Jappa I remember from the last arc that we had a lot of infernals fighting side by side with the Malfies at the second battle of Semar. Remember the Skinless Lady? I would guess she has found reasons to side with the "cousins" once bound behind the wall.

I also can't help but wonder if it has anything to do with the wierd caption on page 41 or 42 (?) of the new core book

I know Henry has mentioned the analogues for the val tensen and the val'sheem. One was called the ul'Tang if memmory serves - though I don't know which one is which. There was also an ul serving the old Duke (Victor) of Tralia in the post of Warmaster - not sure what his last name was.

Traditionally the Uls dedicated to/descended from Hurrian only protected those whom they thought worthy (being unable to be everywhere they prioritize. If you aren't someone they think is worthy then you're on your own. Though I think that snippet came out pre-Storm, be interesting to know if that affected them or if they descended from some other line) The uls dedicated to Larissa grow to enormous girth as they embody the sensuousness of eating - think sumo wrestlers.

It has been mentioned that the ul's have different powers which (I think) means some sort of seperate creation from the traditonal vals families. Its not clear to me yet if "ul" is just the Khitani way of saying "val" or if the difference in names somehow marks some other difference between the two groups.

What happened with the Nierite Legions (particularly the Legion of Searing Purity) between the Assasination attempt of the Emperor which led to the worship of Nier banned and the coming of Calcestus? Were they simply 'de-Nier-ified' or completely dissolved until the Civil War?

Hello Cody,

Most, if not all the Nierite legions were disbanded as their members were executed or banished for the transgression of their leaders.

Best,

I assume that they were reinstated following Calcestus' killing Felician? I also remeber a référence to the Cohort of Searing purity being a Canceri unit in Temptations of the Flesh.

Why do you think that Khitan hasn't tried (apparently) to contact Haina? The Hainese have been in contact with Eastern Onara (Coryan, Ymandragore, etc) for 50 years, and the pass originally discovered exitted near the Vastwood between Canceri and Khitan. Why wouldn't Khitan or any of the Western States like the Andai have made an effort to communicate with them?

We don't know that they haven't. All we know for sure is that is that the players have never seen any sign of the Khitani in the unsealed lands.

Its a fun question. I have the following (very unofficial) thoughts...

1) we know (from a post by Henry somewhere) that the Khitani Empire has few true cities like most of "known" Onara. Instead its very agricultural with many smaller "villages." So one reason why there is little contact might be that there are just not that many neighbors on the border - and those that are there want to keep their heads down and avoid trouble/notice by the infernals.

2) given the above, there is little trade that could be offered ... and the risk from Khitani locals encountering infernals is perceived to be greater than any benifits.

3) Khitan is ruled by the Sleeping Emperor (a Valinor) who spends the overwhelming part of its time asleep ... only rising periodically to issue often cryptic instructions. Its possible that Khitan has received an instruction from the SE that makes them think they need to stay out of Haina.

3 1/2) The people of Khitan may think initiating contact with Haina is so portentious that they don't want to do anything without ITS word and are effectively waiting for the Sleeping Emperor to tell them what to do.

4) Its possible the people of Khitan think the people of the unsealed lands have become impure from their long confinement with the infernals. Its also possible that the Khitan accept the worship of Anshar unlike Haina and they are staying out due to some ind of religious controvery (this I admit seems unlikely - but I very much want to know when Anshar became an accepted part of the Pantheon and when/how she got dropped by the people of Haina/Khitan).

5) Its possible Khitan is worried about the possibility of having a border with infernals and as a result are preppared to hold Haina as a "fender" while they manage to keep themselves from getting involved.

6) As incredible as it sounds maybe something is going on in the west that has consumed all their attention for the last 50 years so that they don't have official time for "that side show to the east". =) For the sake of Onara I hope this isn't true!

7) Finally and more realisticaly its possible that the Warlord of Haina does not want to answer to the Court of Khitan and is keeping the Khitani at arms length to hold onto his power in Haina.

Hello Cody and Eric,

Interesting speculations, but you jumped the gun a bot.

Most, if not all your questions/hypothesis will be answered in Hard Point 10.

Coming Soon.....

To Eric: Legacy of Damnation contains many references to the "Great Cities of Khitan" which suggests to me that they DO have major cities, probably sitting deep in the Empire or along its Rivers (like the major cities in China).

To Henry: Baited Breath, good sir. . . Baited breath. . . (ditto for my players, I think Wink )

Here is more of a supposition point: The Sleeping Emperor of Khitan.

We know that the Sleeping Emperor is a Valinor. We know that he doesn't often participate in the lives of his people, which is probably what keeps him alive in the face of what happens when Valinor take power. Typically, however, fallen Valinor are stripped of their powers, or have them severely deminished. There are cannon references to the Sleeping Emperor, however, having great power which seems to rival the most powerful of the Valinor like Manetas. For example, the Sleeping Emperor is said to have spoken one word upon briefly waking, and leveled the core of the Auxunite Empire. However, it has been seen that in a battle between the Pride of Illiir and the Sleeping Emperor, the Emperor would not win (alternate future: Sleeping Emperor impaled on the tallest tower of the Palace in Coryan).

As to the nature of the Sleeping Emperor, there have been a few hints on what God the Sleeping Emperor was dedicated to. It would be strongly suggested that he would be a follower of Illiir, as Illiir is the King of the Gods. This would allow him the most power possible in terms of all know. Then again, the Sleeping Emperor (supposedly) prophesized the coming of the Time of Terror, giving the Khitani people the secrets of Sarishan Steel. This could mean that the Sleeping Emperor could have some ties to Sarish and Larissa.

The tie to Larissa could also be made (very tenuously) due to the presence of the Tultipetan Dwarves in the Khitau mountains. It is know that following the fall of the First Imperium, the Khitani did NOT have Celestial Giant caretakers (possibly due to the presence of the Sleeping Emperor). However, the fact that the Dwarves of Larissa eventually settled near Khitan does suggest there are some ties to the Prophatess to Khitan. Furthermore, unless I'm mistaken the Sleeping Emperor also prophesized the return of the Khitani to the First City, though the prophesy was somewhat misinterpreted by his followers.

Ideas?

(Note: Unless I'm mistaken, one of the Effects of the Storm was that the Sleeping Emperor woke up. Perhaps this is what will cause Khitan to enter the world stage again. . .)
