I was having a discussion with another player about how initiative and actions work in RC and we both came up with the same question. Please forgive me if this is something that's already been dealt with in the Arcanis setting (I'm still just at the very beginning of reading through it).

I know that some actions take 2 (seconds/lengths of time) to complete, some 4, and some 6. But it would seem to me (especially in a superheroic campaign), that there must be a way for certain characters (say especially fast, or quick reacting) to shave off some of that time. Maybe they can't affect the fastest actions (so 2 remains 2) but the longer ones might be taken down by 1.

So my question, does such a thing exist?

Having not seen the rules, I can only speculate and extrapolate from the Arcanis rules.

in Arcanis, there exists a Talent called "Quick" which shaves 1 Tick (the generic time unit used in combat) off any Movement-based or Charge-based actions (to a minimum of 1). This effectively makes them quicker in movement. There are other talents like "Quick Draw" that make readying a weapon a speed 1 action that can be combined with other actions as well.

As for Rotting Capes, I've no idea if they will use these same Talents or create new methods for supporting 'fast' characters. I would guess there will be 'Talents' (or Maneuver equivalents) that can reduce the speed of movement even further to simulate 'speedster' type characters.

Greetings,

Yes in RC all actions fall into 4 speed types

Trivial (1 Tick)
Simple (2 Ticks)
Complex (4 Ticks)
Demanding (6 Ticks)

As of right now there are only two ways to reduce a speed cost

1) Spend a plot die to reduce the speed category of an action by 1 (Thus Complex action becomes Simple action)

2) use a power that allows you to reduce the speed category of an action by 1. But only a limited #/scene and at a high burnout cost.

Any future abilities will work in very much the same way.. by reducing the speed category by one..

I want to stay away from -1/+1 tick bonus/modifies as keeping it simple speeds up the game and thus feels less tactical and more cinematic

Thanks both of you. We were thinking in terms of powers, e.g superheroes who were extremely fast (like Flash) or could react quickly (like Spiderman's danger sense). So, I agree, you should not get into defining modifiers which could become cumbersome.

Don't worry both of those powers are covered in the book...

heck one of the pre-gens was a speedster... and damn good one at that.
