|
|
I have a WH question...
I am running a pretty darn good WH campaign for over a year now. My players are having a blast.
BUT....
In the core book, it is mentioned that Witch Hunters have some sort of "marker" so they can spot each other.
Does this include Witch Hunters which they have not met before? i.e. Walking down the street in Vienna, and seeing a 'marker' on someone across the street?
What about....
If a PC or NPC REALLY does something EVIL, can they loose their "marker"?
I have a NPC Witch Hunter who has made a deal with The Adversary to sell out the characters. Would the NPC lose her "marker"?
Thanks! |

Hello Richard,
Sounds like you're running a heck of a campaign!
In answer to your question - the so-called mark is something that has been discussed frequently - and heatedly at times.
The basic idea was that WHs would recognize another as a WH to help with the issue of Europeans and Amerinds interacting with one another and not killing each other at first glance.
As I originally envisioned it, it was akin to a feeling that the Immortals from the Highlander movie/TV show get but not at such a long range. If you come within "close" visual range of another WH, you would know that you have each been "marked" or ":touched" by the divine and are kindred spirits, so to speak.
Now, as to your NPC - if he has so much Damnation that he has lost his "divine touch" then yes- he wouldn't make a blip on the radar.
HOWEVER - having said that - it's your campaign and you can make it work as you need it to work. Maybe in your world, once marked, always marked - no matter what.
Or - even easier - there is no such marking in your campaign.
Hope that helps.

So.... In that case...
Should I tell my characters that he no longer is "marked"? Or only tell them if they ask?
Or ....
Make them make a Notice roll to see if they spot it missing? |

Hello Richard,
Again it's up to you. What makes for a better story?
As I thought about this some more, maybe the "tingling sense you get from the mark"only occurs once, when you meet the person. It would certainly be distracting/annoying having it going off endlessly.
If that's the case, then maybe your bad guy was still just on the edge when met and has since slid over to the Dark Side. In that case, the WHs wouldn't notice anything.
Bottom line, Richard - it's your campaign. Change or tweak the rules as you need to so that the best story can be told. NEVER let rules hamstring you in the telling of a good story. Your players seem to be having fun, so I don't think it would be an issue.

Humm....
Last night my Hunters go into a bar fight when they were meeting with the bad NPC (which was their ally recently...) with some cultists, and the Venetian city guard decided to poke their nose in also... and yea... the 'bad NPC' is the guy who set them up for the fight...
I had the guys roll to notice (d3) if he was missing "the marker", and only one person succeeded. The funny thing was he did not tell the rest of the group yet.
I asked him why, in private - after the game, and he said that his character realized that he has fallen from Grace, and think his character can help bring him back. And if that does not work, then he can use this information to his advantage somehow -- leaking false info to The Adversary...
I know when he does tell the group, there will be hell to pay, as this character has 'undercut' the rest of the party several times already! |

Another concept that might work, and this is not any kind of official thing.
One could have it so that Witch Hunters only recognize each other when they are acting in that role towards the same end. The characters were directed to the event by omen and sign, but some other WH might be moving through the area, or set upon another purpose and would never be recognized. _________________ Eric Wiener
