Heck I'll start
I'm running a home game based in Almeric... inspired by the events of Song of Ice and Fire (Namely book 1 and 2) I altered the cannon timeline a little and based the campaign 10 years after a relative peace had settled in Almeric.. in essence many of the armies had fought to a stand still and alliances where formed as cities formed into city states....
Over the two months of gaming the peace has been shattered 5 houses are at war, and the Hero's own house (which they where all members of or connected to) has been framed for the assassination of a family patriarch and his oldest son (who was betrothed to one of the characters)
One of my players has taken up the mantel of the "story chronicler" and she records (in character) everything that has taken place... It helps me keep track of the story and reminds me of my own foreshadowing (which I LOVE to do)
So far the story is 8 pages long, and she is about two games behind (I should be getting her entries sometime of the next week)
I have been playing around with posting it here, with maps I have made for the game and so on... with BIG "NOT CANNON" remarks all over the place. _________________ Pedro C Barrenechea

I'm currently not. Still caught up in my 3.5 campaign. I was just interested in what everyone else might be doing. Along with if anyone else was actually running a home game.
The interest struck me because a lot of the players I'm enticing toward the game are looking from something with more role than roll. And a lot of them have never played in a home campaign! Even some of the older players. So I wanted to be able to talk about what you guys were doing with them. Sanctioned/shared play, sanctioned/shared play in Arcanis, and home campaigns/adventures are 3 different experiences. _________________ -Devin Redd, Detroit Harvester

VERY,
there are simply things you can do in a home game you can't do in living campaigns... you develop deeper connections to NPCs and between the Heroes and as the Chronicler you can always change the story to the players actions....
For example there was a throw away supporting character (what I like to call NPCs) that the heroes totally fell in love with. I changed some story elements and swamped out supporting characters...
Now that throw away supporting character is going to be part of a bad ass story line, and if things work out.. a powerful, bitter sweet, ending.....
You also develop subplots between the characters, you can create entire adventures based off players actions....
as a story teller... you have so much power to tell a good story, and the players have real time control over the outcome...
Oh ya.. foreshadowing is fun!
~~~~~~~~
As an aside: I have not had so much fun running a game in years... a good home games are epic, even when it's only a personal story. _________________ Pedro C Barrenechea
I totally get all that Pedro. I've got a campaign going on year 5 now. Deep stuff. And I have a campaign that we only play for 8 hours each month and they are all sooo connected with their characters.
One of the biggest selling points I've had for gathering players is that in the Legends of Arcanis campaign, the players can actually effect the story line. _________________ -Devin Redd, Detroit Harvester
Which was one of our main goals, we wanted to attempt to meld home game play and shared campaign play.
turned out to be a LOT harder then we expected. _________________ Pedro C Barrenechea
turned out to be a LOT harder then we expected. | BUT WE ALL LOVE IT! Ruining Uncle Henry's plans is just too much fun each con, especially after the larp. That's why we were all so surprised at the lack of result submission on HPs 8 and 9. _________________ -Devin Redd, Detroit Harvester
My home campaign started with the players (experienced roleplayers but initiates of Arcanis like me) all picking Val.
We have a Milandisian priest of Beltine, an exiled Psion from Milandir, a Coryani Patrician, a Hinterland Diplomat and two brothers from Coryan who work together as members of the Noctuni (a Thief-Taker agency of the Empire)
They awoke however in a stone, windowless room, feeling somewhat sickened and with little memory of how they came to be there. In the room were other Val that had not awakened.
They escaped by working together, only to find themselves aboard a mighty black stone ship! Having searched the ship, they found it empty with signs of recent battle. Further exploration revealed the ship (NOW I'M DEFINITELY WAY OFF CANON!) to be powered by magical runes. In a library filled with many books about myths, legends and religion the characters found a prisoner who had hiding in a cupboard.
He reported that a group of mysterious characters wearing black hooded cloaks had captured one of the Harvester ships and had been using it secretly for the leader's own ends. He had rounded up almost two hundred Val from various families and walks of life and had used an alchemical poison to put them into a 'hibernetic' state. They were 'fed' a magical powder that kept them barely alive but unable to wake and were being kept in the cells below ship. The leader had been studying some newly discovered scrolls from the Unsealed lands and had matched one particular piece of text with a similar one found in the Blessed Lands. He, rightly or wrongly, had put the two together to discover a prophesy regarding the power found in the Val. He was then attempting to create a ritual to transfer the power into himself (ANOTHER OFF CANON ROAD)
However, one of the rituals had awaken the Krakken, a mythical beast from the bottom of the ocean and this left the ship devoid of crew; the runes the only thing keeping the ship afloat, moving and still invisible. Finding some emergency supplies of rigging and cloth they constructed a set of sails and began the arduous task of getting ashore.
At that point they discovered that a small boat used to go ashore was still attached to the ship and hanging on was one of the Black robed cultists. Rescuing him they found that his mind was damaged by fear and drinking too much sea water. Careful attention and healing brought some semblance of sanity and the characters found a few more bits of detail to back up the otherwise obtained details.
After a few days of sailing, the characters found that they were heading for the south east coast of the Hinterlands (WHERE I HAD PLANNED TO EMBED THE SOFT POINT ADVENTURE IN THE PRICKLESPUR FOREST)
However, the characters had other ideas. Led by the 'flawed' hero in the group, they realised they couldn't risk abandoning almost two hundred comatose Val to the hinterland hoards and needed to get them to somewhere more civilised. So a week of navigating the invisible stone ship along the coast saw them beach it on an island in the mouth if the river Niechau (unbeknownst to me until later, a pivotal area in the history of Milandir and the Black Fleet!)
They then rowed the boat to a fishing village where they bought all three horses the village had to offer and a cart and rode the days travel to the capital city.
They left the freed captive to look after the Val in their absence. A MONUMENTAL MISTAKE BUT TOTALLY UNKNOWINGLY)
On the way they encountered a scuffle in the middle of the road. A larger man was besting a smaller person in brawl. This turned out to be a ruse and the bandits unleashed arrows form the Heath to the side. However, the Val used all their abilities to vanquish the foes and captured many. The smaller creature, was a gnome called Jakes (HOPEFULLY A LINK TO A FUTURE ADVENTURE) and they sent him on his way with money and weapons.
Arriving at the city gates they saw posters everywhere announcing the 6th Crusade of the Light.
We play every Tuesday evening and this is a summary of their current progress. I'm sure I making mistakes and could be using many other bits of information but it seems to be working and the players are enjoying themselves.
I hope you enjoyed reading it |
